Breastfeeding Bars – boost your ‘milk-making super powers’!

As a breastfeeding mumma, one of my favourite snacks at the moment are my ‘Breastfeeding Bars’… museli bars made with ‘magic ingredients’ guaranteed to boost your ‘milk-making super powers’!

If you are a breastfeeding mum, you’ve probably heard of lactation biscuits/breastfeeding cookies/boobie bikkies before…  Shortly after spunk #3 arrived, a friend put me onto a lactation cookie recipe.   While I quite enjoyed these lactation cookies, I was a little worried about all the sugar and butter and my butt!  During one of my 3am feeding sessions, I was Googling lactation recipes – it turns out there are heaps of other ‘lactation’ foods out there.  Basically, there are 3 magic ingredients:  oats, flaxseed and brewer’s yeast which are known to boost your ‘milk-making’ ability! I found a recipe from the Cocina Monologues for Lactation Granola Bars (which are pretty much museli bars if you ask me…) and I have adjusted it slightly and converted it for my Thermomix. It really is as easy as throwing the ingredients in your thermie, mixing and baking.  (If you don’t have a thermomix or equivalent, no dramas, just use your hands – yes your actual hands – to mix!)

Ingredients

Canola oil to spray

200g rolled oats

150g plain wholemeal flour

100g brown sugar (decrease if you are worried about the amount)

45g wheat germ

40g flaxseed meal

2 tablespoons brewer’s yeast

1 teaspoon cinnamon

2 teaspoons vanilla

Pinch salt

120g honey

120g coconut oil

1 egg

70g cranberries

120g chocolate chips

Directions

Preheat oven to 180°C and spray an 18 x 27cm (9×13”) baking tin with canola oil spray.

Add all ingredients to the thermomix bowl, mix for 25 seconds, speed 2-3 on reverse, until well combined.  (You may need a little longer depending on your coconut oil consistency).

Add all ingredients to thermomix bowl

Press mixture into the baking tin, and bake for 25 minutes.

Press mixture into baking pan

Once cooked, cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes .  Turn out onto a chopping board and cut to desired size ( I tend to cut into 28 pieces – 4 x 7).

Warning – this recipe is addictive!  I keep mine in the freezer to ensure I don’t eat the whole lot in 2 days!  I’ve found it’s best to call them ‘Mummy’s special boobie bars’, that ‘only mummy can have’… otherwise the kids will devour them!  If you have a friend who has recently had a baby, make her a batch – she’ll love you for it!

If you’re in the country like me, your local supermarket may not have all the necessary ingredients (like the flaxseed meal and brewer’s yeast).  Check out an online health store – I used www.just-health.com.au and ordered a 1kg bag of flaxseed meal and brewer’s yeast for about $55 including shipping.  This might sound a bit expensive, but it’s probably about a year’s supply!  I am nowhere near ½ way through each bag, and I’ve been using them for 4+ months.

Be sure to let me know what you think of the ‘Breastfeeding Bars’!  Did they turn you into a ‘Milk Making Machine’?? Are there any other amazing lactation recipes you have used?  Feel free to comment below, or reach out on social media.

See you next time…Keep Chasing…
