Our entryway has been driving me NUTS lately!
It’s the middle of winter, and being a family of 5, this means (at a rough count…) there’s a pile of about 5 jackets, 12 hats, 17 (unmatched) socks and 14 pairs of shoes… overflowing out of the basket! We were in desperate need of a coat rack, but I could not find one anywhere that I liked and was small enough to fit in our small entryway corner.
I decided a DIY upcycle project was in store…
My hubby took me for a drive to a spot on the farm where an old barn used to stand… I think he’s coming around to this ‘rustic /DIY/upcycle’ thing! I found a piece of wood that not only looked AWESOME but also just happened to be the PERFECT size! No cutting required! Which means both ends of the rack have that gorgeous weathered look… It’s possibly definitely embarrassing how excited I was about this!
Since I was going for a really rustic look, I didn’t sand or prepare the wood at all, besides a quick clean up with the air compressor. And with the wood the perfect length, we could go right ahead and screw on the coat hooks… which I’ve since been told look like a drunk octopus looking for a fight! Haha!
Hubby helped with this bit too… as I said… coming around nicely! After a bit of measuring and eyeballing to decide where to place the hooks, we (ok, he) screwed the first hook on… one screw at a time, so that we could check everything was square, and adjust as needed.
He used the metal ruler to make sure the hooks were lining up with each other… he’s clever like that! After deciding everything looked square, the final screws went in…
And, just like… the coat rack was done! Seriously… how easy! Next came attaching to the wall… as we were attaching to our kitchen cabinetry, screwing it in wasn’t an option… but I’d definitely recommend screwing your coat rack into wall studs to make sure it’s extra sturdy and won’t come tumbling down under the weight of heavy coats.
I’m seriously loving this coat rack…it’s got so much character, and I also love that it was once a part of the old barn… how cool! The entry corner is looking much better now too… the next step is adding a mirror to the opposite wall. The question is… will I find one I like?!
How’s your entryway looking? Organised chaos or just chaos? Perhaps a DIY project this weekend could solve your headaches?! I’d love to hear how you go! Feel free to comment below, or reach out on social media.
See you next time…Keep Chasing…
